The Secrets of Bedtime Stories

 The Secrets of Bedtime Stories

We’ve all heard about bedtime stories, but why? Why should we do bedtime stories? Is it beneficial or simply a way to get our kids to fall asleep quickly?

We often hear many persons advising that it’s good to read bedtime stories to our kids or promote some aspect of a story time before bed. Let’s dive a bit deeper into what exactly are bedtime stories and why they can be beneficial to your child’s reading journey!

What are bedtime stories?

A bedtime story is a traditional storytelling technique in which a tale is read to a kid just before bedtime to get them ready for sleep. Reading bedtime stories to your child may be the ideal way to spend some cherished time and attention with them, however, this straightforward reading practice has advantages beyond just lulling them to sleep.

  1. Relaxation

At bedtime, your child is relaxed and at peace. Reading a story during this time may result in children being more willing and excited to hear the story during this time versus other times of the day. This also allows your child to associate reading with relaxation and fun, not stress and anxiety. Many students hate reading because it’s an activity associated with stress and anxiety, however, when story time becomes a fun and relaxing moment they become more enthusiastic about reading.

  1. Encourages Reading

When bedtime stories become a custom or tradition in your home, it becomes an activity that your child can look forward to. This encourages them to read and ask questions about the story. These simple acts during bedtime stories can later be transferred to reading sessions during the day since, due to the fun and relaxation they’ve associated with bedtime stories, reading becomes an activity that they look forward to.

  1. Improves Reading Skills

Reading, at any time, is good as it exposes you to new vocabulary and broadens your imagination. Reading a bedtime story every night introduces your child to new words, ideas and information every day. The more words they are exposed to, the more familiar they become with different types of words, and the more they read, the better they become.

Reading allows your child's imagination to explore new locations and sends them on a journey outside of their familiar surroundings. Reading to your child can be done at any age. Reading aloud to your child during bedtime stories helps them to get comfortable with the language and develop pre-literacy abilities that will enable them to have a love of reading as they grow.

Are bedtime stories a part of your family’s routine? It’s never too late to start!
