3 Ways To Improve Your Child’s Vocabulary Skills

What role does vocabulary play in reading?

There is a significant link between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension; in order to increase understanding, pupils must comprehend the meaning of the terms they will be reading. Students with a strong vocabulary and previous knowledge have a better chance of comprehending the text they are reading. Reading comprehension relies heavily on vocabulary. Readers cannot comprehend what they are reading unless they are familiar with the meanings of the majority of the terms. Children must acquire the meaning of new terms that are not part of their speech vocabulary as they learn to read more challenging texts.

Vocabulary development is a lifelong process in which we acquire new words, their meanings, and how to employ them in sentences. Because acquiring vocabulary is a continuous process, it's vital to remember that there are a number of methods for doing so, many of which are dependent on the age group and abilities of the target audience.

Reading

Reading is undeniably one of the most effective methods for learning new vocabulary. Reading allows you to view words in context, which makes it far more useful than memorizing word lists. When you encounter terms in context, it's easier to increase your vocabulary. Seeing words in a book or a story can be significantly more beneficial than seeing them on a vocabulary list. You not only learn new terms, but you also get to observe how they're utilized.

Flashcards

Using flashcards to study a handful of words is a quick approach to expand your vocabulary. A wide range of smartphone apps make flashcards convenient and easy to arrange in today's digital age. Hardcopy flashcards also provide a hands-on approach for learning new words. It's normal to aim for one new word per day. You can always strive for more, but it might not be practical to learn dozens of terms every day. Students can use their new vocabulary word in phrases and provide examples. This helps with their understanding and recollection of the word.

Word Games

Scrabble, Hangman, Crossword Puzzles, and Word Search are all popular games that can help your child's vocabulary expand. In addition, you can do some note-taking after each round of these word games. Encourage kids to keep track of the new words they learnt while playing the game, study the definitions, and practise applying their new vocabulary words in conversations.
