Introduction to the Science of Reading

Caribbean Academy for Reading Intervention and Development blog was created to share research and evidence-based reading strategies, resources and tips so that parents, reading tutors and teachers can better understand how children learn to read and therefore be able to assist their struggling readers so that they can develop a love for reading.

At the Caribbean Academy for Reading Intervention and Development we endorse Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading.

What is the Science of Reading ?

The Science of Reading is a thorough study that  equips us with the knowledge needed to  better comprehend how we learn to read, what abilities are required, how they interact, and which regions of the brain are engaged in reading development.

The Science of Reading is a vast collection of research from numerous fields including linguistics, cognitive psychology and neurology, that examines both typical and atypical reading . This scientific effort has converged to guide teachers, parents and tutors worldwide on an evidence-based approach to the teaching of reading.

What makes up the Science of Reading ?

The Science of Reading comprises five main components :

  • Phonemic Awareness

  • Phonics

  • Fluency

  • Vocabulary

  • Comprehension

Why is the Science of Reading Important ?

The Science of Reading is essential in the realm of education and teaching approaches because it has the ability to transfer into reading instructional methods by understanding the cognitive processes that are necessary for successful reading acquisition.

It assists us in comprehending the cognitive processes required for reading success. It stimulates the growth of both typical and atypical readers' reading abilities. Whole word memorization is difficult to teach, but knowing phonics (a component of the science of reading) boosts pupils exponentially.

The growth of the Science of Reading has been aided by research designs, experimental procedures, volunteers, and statistical analysis. The Science of Reading also helps pupils understand what they're reading, which is one of the primary aims of reading.

Phonics and phonemic manipulation are required in the Science of Reading for students to create a sight word vault or orthographic lexicon. Students will need adequate practice and review in decoding and encoding, as well as awareness and implementation of concept skills and experience with decodable text, to achieve this.

Educators are able to recognize and prioritize the sequence of abilities to increase phonological awareness from early to advanced skill levels, highlighting phonemic awareness as a necessary pre-reading skill in accordance with the Science of Reading. Students with varying degrees of reading impairments require qualified and experienced teachers with the knowledge and expertise to give intervention based on the Science of Reading. Students are given multiple opportunities to code-emphasize using decodable text with abundant representations of the phonetic parts.

Students gain proficiency in learning to spell within and outside of the material by dictating words and sentences using the phonetic principle on a regular basis.

Altogether the Science of Reading provides a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to the teaching of reading, one that can be applied to typical and atypical readers. It is an approach that has been compiled from research emanating from various fields of study relating to how we learn to read and the concepts needed to ensure the best and most efficient reading journey.
